John Gregg (baker)

John Robson Gregg (died 1964) was the founder of Greggs, one of the United Kingdom's largest bakery busineseses.

Career

Brought up on Tyneside, Jack Gregg (as he was known) initially made a living visiting local houses selling yeast and eggs for customers to bake their own bread.[1] Jack was called up to serve in the British Army during World War I and during this time his wife bought two vans and started distributing confectionery as well ingredients for bread.[1] Just before World War II he established a proper bakery on Tyneside but it was not until 1951 that he opened a shop in Gosforth.[2]

He died suddenly in 1964.[1]

Family

He was married to Elsie and together they went on to have two sons and one daughter.[1]
